1.  Explanation text
Social function: to explain the process involved in the formation or workings of natural or socio-cultural phenomena.
Generic structure: general statement, sequence, explanation of why and how something occurs, closing.
Language feature: focus on generic, non-human participants, use simple present, use temporal and casual conjunctive relations and mainly material or action; some passive to theme right.
2.   Analytical exposition
Social function: to persuade the reader or listener that something is the case.
Generic structure: Thesis, argument, reiteration/summing up.
Language feature: focus on generic human and non-human participants, more use modality and modulation, few temporal conjunctive relation, reasoning expressed as the verves and nouns and use of material and relation and mental process.
3.   Hortatory exposition
Social function: to persuade the reader that something should or should not be the case.
Generic structure:  thesis, arguments, recommendation
Language feature: focus on generic human and non-human participants, use mental processes, material processes, relational processes and use of simple present tense.
4.   Discussion
Social function:  to present (at least) two point of views about an issue
Generic structure: issue, arguments for and against or statement of differing points of view conclusion or recommendation
Language feature: focus on generic human and non-human participants, use modality and modulation, use of logical conjunctive relations, reasoning expressed as verbs and nouns and use of material and also mental process.
5.   News story/items
Social function: factual text which inform readers of the day which are considered newsworthy or important
Generic structure: newsworthy event, background event, sources.
Language features: short, telegraphic information about story summarized in one sentence, use of material or action processes to retell story, and use of projecting verbal process it source stage.
6.   Review
Social function: to critique an art work or event for public audience
Generic structure: orientation interpretative recount, evaluation, evaluative summation
Language feature: focus on particular participants, direct expression of opinions through use of attitudinal lexis, use elaboration and extending clause and group complexes to package the information, and use metaphorical language.
